Code of Conduct
To foster an inclusive and equitable environment, ALL members of the Department of Molecular Biosciences, without exception, must commit to the following principles:
- Adopt a zero-tolerance policy for overt and covert acts of discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status, or religion.
- Encourage all voices. Help new perspectives be heard and value the strength that the unique identities and perspectives of every individual bring to our department.
- Be courteous in conversation and ensure that criticism, when offered, is constructive, respectful, and aimed at creating positive discussion.
- Acknowledge that we all have biases and be mindful that both explicit and implicit bias affects our daily behaviors. Take steps to recognize and address your own bias.
- Be proactive in identifying and helping to eliminate barriers that face members of underrepresented groups.
- Strive to ensure that all members of our community have full access to opportunities for professional development, departmental service, and networking that happens in social contexts.
- Challenge your assumptions about people from dissimilar backgrounds.
- Educate and train yourself on diversity, inclusivity, reporting, and bystander intervention techniques.
- Speak up when others exhibit discriminatory or disrespectful behavior or speech. Speaking up can take the form of direct communication or confidential reporting.
- Be supportive and respectful of those who report concerns.
